campus ribbon
the new building of the messendorf graz education campus seamlessly integrates into the small-scale structure of the surrounding area, creating a strong urban edge with its clear contours. a special feature is the continuous green space that is enhanced by targeted interventions and additions to the exterior. this green space creates a "campus ribbon" that connects the entire campus more closely together and continues into the new building, fostering a sense of community and connection among students and staff.
green cascade
at the building's forecourt, the ribbon transforms into a cascade that wraps around the structure, providing accessible outdoor space on all levels. there are several open space plateaus that offer opportunities for break areas, learning zones, or even a restaurant terrace. the ribbon culminates in access to the roofscape, which features variously designed pixels that provide a comprehensive and bio-diverse sensory experience in all seasons, as well as serving as an active habitat for teachers, students, visitors, and animals such as butterflies, bees, and insects.
sensory gardens
the building also includes four thematic courtyards, each with a unique character and all connected to the outside area by the surrounding cascade. these courtyards encourage sensory perception in order to create a pleasant and appealing learning climate. climbing plants form a green curtain along the cascade, making the building's different micro-climatic conditions perceivable and tangible. the existing façades also feature trellises as a curtain structure, which wrap them in a green dress that creates new, exciting spaces in between. the entire campus will be covered with green roofs and squares, and the roofs may also have photovoltaic panels to generate renewable energy.
