a new hub for the campus
the new cafeteria building on the deutz campus of the cologne university of applied sciences is designed to be a vibrant gathering place for both academic life and everyday activities. located between campusallee and campusplatz, the building connects the main pathways and creates a space where people can come together — to eat, study, and socialize. spacious interiors, an open foyer, and seamless transitions to terraces and outdoor areas make the cafeteria the social heart of the campus.

open, flexible, and well-connected
the architecture emphasizes clear structures and versatile spaces. the cafeteria spans two levels, connected by an atrium that floods the interior with natural light. the space is complemented by a cafeteria, event areas, work zones, and administrative spaces. different functions intertwine, enabling flexible use — from a quick lunch to events and informal gatherings.

designed and built with sustainability in mind
a central component of the concept is the mindful use of resources. existing materials are reused and visibly integrated into the new architecture — for example, in the distinctive patchwork base. rhis is complemented by low-carbon concrete, timber construction on the upper floors, and renewable energy from solar and geothermal sources. the result is a building that is not only functionally impressive but also carries on the history of the site and looks sustainably toward the future.
