5 years and already iconic
on 08/26/2021, “our” IKEA at westbahnhof opened with a concept that was radically new at the time: a five-story IKEA in the heart of the city, with no parking lot, accessible by public transit, bike, or on foot.
five years later, the building landscaped with over 160 trees is a fixture of vienna's cityscape. with its striking architecture, it's highly recognizable and has even been hailed as one of the city's new landmarks. we think that, to mark the anniversary, the building deserves its own emoji, which illustrates this post.
designed from the outset to be a “good neighbor”, the publicly accessible rooftop terrace has established itself as a popular gathering spot and offers space for flea markets, yoga sessions, or after-work get-togethers. together with the hostel on the upper two floors, this has created a place that is used and appreciated by visitors and neighbors alike.
with its trees on the facade and roof, the building also helps improve the microclimate. the greenery provides shade, increases humidity, and has been proven to help cool the surrounding area.
we wish you all the best for your birthday!
